Photos from Day 29
An ore dock used to load local iron ore onto large ships.
We left the Marriott around 8 AM and headed to downtown Fargo following the recommendation of one of the waiters at the Indian restaurant. The downtown area was charming and clearly undergoing a revival as are so many cities. In so many of these cities & towns the railroad goes right through the center of town, stopping all traffic for as long as necessary.
For breakfast we dined at Bernbaum’s deli, enjoying delicious seeded bagel, egg, and cheese sandwiches. Our drive toward Michigan’s Upper Peninsula took us out of South Dakota, through Minnesota, and Wisconsin following rail lines along US 2, various state and even county roads. The landscape was dominated by fields of corn and wheat, and the further east we travelled, the greener it got. Passing through Duluth, and crossing into Wisconsin we paralleled the Lake Superior shoreline as we approached the U.P.
We did not have a reservation for a campground, and since it was a Sunday with a rainy forecast we thought that wouldn’t be a problem, but we were wrong. We were turned away from several state park facilities in the Purcupine Mountains before we finally finding a space at the Ontonagon County Park on Lake Gogebic.
Our late dinner consisted of fresh corn, tortilla soup purchased at a Safeway in Whitefish, Montana, and beer.
